LONDON -- Wayne Rooney marked the start of his England captaincy by scoring a penalty in an uninspiring 1-0 victory over Norway in front a record-low crowd for the team at the new Wembley Stadium on Wednesday. In Englands first game since its worst-ever World Cup showing, Roy Hodgsons side rarely looked like scoring against unambitious opposition and the breakthrough in the friendly only came when Raheem Sterling was tripped in the penalty area. From the penalty spot, Rooneys 41st international goal in the 68th minute gave the 28-year-old striker sole possession of fourth place on the England scoring leaderboard, just eight behind Bobby Charltons record. "We all could have done better," Rooney said. "In the first half we moved quite well but they made it difficult for us and sat back and created a few opportunities in the first half. "In the second half we started really sloppy and that was disappointing as we wanted to go out and really take the game to them." The attendance was given as 40,181 but appeared to be lower at 90,000-capacity stadium, given it included the 17,000 Club Wembley members who have access to every game. The previous lowest since the new stadium opened in 2007 saw 48,876 attend a 2011 friendly against Sweden. When England left Brazil early after losing twice and drawing once, this friendly was always going to be a tough sell when England is contracted to playing all home games at Wembley. With stalwart midfielders Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard retiring after the World Cup, this was being billed as the start of a new era, with the average age of the starting lineup 24 as England prepares for the start of qualifying for the 2016 European Championship at Switzerland on Monday. In the post-World Cup post mortem much scrutiny has come on the limiting opportunities for English youngsters. That was highlighted when the summer transfer window closed with the bulk of the 835 million pounds ($1.38 billion) splurged by Premier League clubs being on foreign players. The stubborn Norwegians, who open Euros qualifying against Italy, should be more worried about the state of its national team, which hasnt qualified for a tournament since Euro 2000 and was content sitting back for much of game in north London, showing limited ambition. But England struggled on the ball to capitalize on its domination, with goalkeepr Orjan Nyland rarely troubled. In Sterling, though, England has an electrifying 19-year-old talent. The Liverpool wingers vision was clear when he sent a 25th-minute crossfield ball that went high to the feet of Daniel Sturridge, who could only clip it onto the roof of the net. Yet it was England goalkeeper Joe Hart who had the first save to make just before halftime from Tarik Elyounoussi and appeared uneasy when he had a seemingly easy cross to deal with. At the start of the second half, Hart had to produce a diving one-handed save to keep out a header from Joshua King who rose above inexperienced defender John Stones. But it was Sterlings pace that eventually spared England from embarrassment, when he was brought down by Omar Elabdellaouis sliding challenge, and Rooney converted the spot kick. But England seemed more dangerous up front in the last 20 minutes after Rooney had been replaced by former Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck. The striker, who joined Arsenal on Monday, briefly enlivened a subdued crowd with his endeavour, striking well only to be denied by Nyland. "Wayne will tell you he can play better than that and have better games," Hodgson said. "But youre not always going to give the best performance and you dont become a bad player if you dont put in the performance you wanted." Ricardo Allen Jersey . Sterling was banned for life and fined US$2.5 million by the NBA on Tuesday for racist comments the league says he made in a recorded conversation. Nash, who plays for the rival L.A. Lakers, spoke as a representative of current NBA players at a press conference assembled by Sacramento mayor and National Basketball Players Association adviser Kevin Johnson. Jake Matthews Jersey . Patrick Deslisle-Houde and David Rose each scored in the second to give the fourth-seeded Redmen a 3-1 lead after Jean-Philippe Mathieu scored in the first. http://www.cheapfalconsjerseysonsale.com/ . - Zac Leslie scored two goals and assisted on two more, and Justin Nichols made 34 saves as the Guelph Storm blanked the Kitchener Rangers 6-0 in Ontario Hockey League action on Sunday. Phoenix originally signed Barbosa to a 10-day contract on Jan. 8 after Eric Bledsoe injured his knee and then signed him to another 10-day deal.Greg Rusedski and Peter Fleming have questioned whether or not Britains war horse Andy Murray can physically recover from his epic match with Milos Raonic in time for Sundays ATP World Tour Final. Murray remains on course for a dramatic showdown with Novak Djokovic as the world No 1 fought with gritted teeth and weary limbs to stage a dramatic fightback to defeat Raonic in the semi-finals. Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just £6.99. No contract. The match lasted 18 minutes longer than his marathon victory over Kei Nishikori in the round-robin stage just four days earlier. Now only a 24th straight win will bring the golden end to his remarkable season, and although former British No 1 Rusedski admits it will be hard, he feels Murray will find a way to lift himself for the final. Murray was thrilled to come through against Raonic in the longest match ever at the season-ending tournament It was an absolutely brilliant that third set from Murray in the way he digs deep and finds a way to get the job done, Rusedski told Sky Sports. He breaks another record - 23 matches in a row. Its hard enough doing 10 in a row, but 23 and also against the very best players on the planet. I mean, Raonic was exceptional, he really raised his game. But now Murray must show that belief, that desire to come through. He wants to be year-end number one and we have the dream final possibly happening tomorrow. Murray wins O2 marathon semi Andy Murray beats Milos Raonic in ATP World TTour Finals last four Hes got to get into those ice baths and recover.dddddddddddd. Hes got 24 hours to get ready, but he will be so motivated. I was so impressed - that was one of his greatest performances ever to come through that in three hours and 38 minutes because he had to be tired in that third set.Mentally it is going to be tough for him because hes going to be sore, hes going to be tired and hes got to find a way to lift himself. This is where the experience of coach Ivan Lendl comes in, who has been through these situations before. Murray pulled off this magnificent half volley during the second set tie-break Murray has now played two three-hour monster matches and will be back on court on Sunday evening and Fleming thinks its asking a lot.As usual Andy seems to come up with his best responses when his back is against the wall and it most certainly is now, said former doubles specialist Fleming.Lets face it, hell need to come out quickly and establish himself and hopefully ride the wave.
